Worlds is back after a few days off, and it's time to wrap up the group stage. Today was Group A's turn to finish up their chaotic, unpredictable final matches, and two teams said goodbye to the tournament.
Although three teams started the day at 2-1, EDG and T1 took the day and strolled comfortably into the quarterfinals. Both teams built an overwhelming advantage against FNC and C9, then faced off in a tense match to decide who would take first place.
The early game was incredibly close, with both teams sticking to each other like sternites. But T1 began to pull ahead thanks to Keria's spectacular Soraka performance. Taking Mikael's Crucible as his first item, he neutralized EDG's Lissandra and dedicated himself to protecting his team:
Once the snowball started rolling, there was no stopping T1, and they closed out the game with a gold lead of over 10k. But really, should that surprise us? Every time Faker has attended Worlds, he has managed to come out of groups in first place.
C9 needed a mountain climb to make up for their 0-3 start; though they couldn't escape elimination, they brought the LCS its first group stage win. They steamrolled FNC with confidence and conviction, snowballing through the bot lane and punishing Hylissang's overly eager plays with Soraka:
C9 deserve credit not just for finally giving the home crowd something to cheer about, but also for leaving the stage without compromising their style in their final matches against T1. With nothing left to lose, Zven picked Heimerdinger support and made some great roams in the early game:
There was less to celebrate for FNC. After a spectacular Week 1, they looked great and came into the day ready to play everything, but they crumbled under pressure and finished 0-3.
Humanoid looked incredible all Worlds long with his signature champion, Azir, but Azir was banned today. Hylissang also went Soraka and Nami, once again proving that enchanters aren't as comfortable as engage supports.
But the most frustrating mistake was FNC banning Caitlyn and Fiora instead of Yuumi against T1. The cat, running around with a max Q poke build, hasn't lost a single match at Worlds yet; left open, it became one of the main reasons FNC lost.
A perfectly executed teamfight from T1 against FNC; FNC was punished instantly while trying to take the tier 2 tower. Faker managed to steal Poppy's ult, cut off Akali's dash perfectly, and even toss her right into the waiting arms of his bot lane; truly a spectacular play.
Tomorrow, with G2, JDG, DWG, and EDG fighting for the last two quarterfinal spots, Group B's winner will be decided.
