Depending on the ladder you join, you and your teammate can either queue up in the same game (your scores from shared matches combine) or play separate matches on your own schedule (every game each of you plays counts toward the team total). Check the ladder's rules card before joining, it'll tell you exactly which mode applies.
One important thing: make sure you're queuing into the right game mode. Some ladders run on Ranked, others on ARAM, joining the wrong queue means your matches won't count. It's shown clearly on the ladder before you commit.

Your combined score climbs the leaderboard. Win, and the prize splits 50/50 straight into both wallets.
